Being a pretty competent and independent minded person, I hate to rely on others. I like having my own transportation, my own tool, my own cash. I'm of the opinion that self esteem comes from the ability to do for yourself. You can't ever feel very good about yourself if you have to depend on someone else for your basic needs.
Competence = Confidence
Dependency = Immaturity + Incompetence = Low self-esteem
